West Covina Recognizes 2017 Small Business Award Winners

WEST COVINA, CA, May 5, 2017 – As part of the 2nd Annual West Covina Small Business Week, the City awarded the 2017 City of West Covina Small Business Awards.  The awards included the Innovative Use of Resources Award, the Women in Business Award, and the Small Business of the Year Award. 

The Innovative Use of Resources Award was nominated by the University of La Verne Small Business Development Center (SBDC) honoring a West Covina small business that has leveraged available business resources to grow their business and ensure their success. 

The award was presented to Diltex, Inc. (Owners, Kinoo & Dil Singh).

Diltex Inc. began working with the University of La Verne Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in 2015 to expand their customer base through federal and manufacturer certification programs.  Today, the company has received their 8(a) certification from the U.S. Small Business Administration and developed strong working relationships with senior management from companies like HP, Dell, Samsung, and LG.  As a result, Diltex Inc. has been able to increase sales by 50% in 2015, and 62% in 2016, creating two full-time jobs to support the company’s growth.  Diltex, Inc. is located at 1750 W. Cameron Avenue, Ste 110, West Covina, CA 91790.  Mrs. Kinoo and Mr. Dil Singh are a prime example of small business owners who have successfully utilized the resources available to them to ensure the growth of their business.

The Women in Business Award honored a West Covina small business owned by a woman that has shown unparalleled success, tireless involvement in our community, and outstanding advocacy for the success of women in business.   

The award was presented to The Lab Creative Arts Studio (Owner, Valerie Ramirez). 

In the past three years, the Lab Creative Arts Studio (The Lab) has had over 4,500 classes and workshops, inspiring over 5,000 students of diverse backgrounds.  The Lab is located at 541 N. Azusa Avenue, West Covina, CA 91791.  The owner of the Lab, Ms. Valerie Ramirez, has 15 years of experience in studio ownership and team direction.  Dance teams from the Lab have received local and national awards and recognition, having won competitions at varying dance levels.  The dance studio will look to add to its list of accolades this spring, when it will be featured on the upcoming NBC dance competition reality show, “World of Dance.”  Ms. Ramirez’s students have also had success in the professional dance industry, having been hired for marketing campaigns of large corporations, dancing roles on numerous television shows, and joined world tours of well-known recording artists.  Under Ms. Ramirez’s direction, students are given lessons in hard work, humility, commitment, and humor - an approach that has helped to shape hundreds of her pupils.  For Ms. Ramirez, the Lab was founded to create a lasting legacy and lay a foundation empowering the next generation of girls to reach their goals.   The Lab Creative Arts Studio is a great example of a successful woman owned business that has made outstanding efforts in furthering the success of women. 

The Small Business of the Year Award honored a West Covina small business that has shown growth and/or sustainability of their business and exemplary commitment and dedication to our community.

The award was presented to Crossfit Insurgent (Owner, Brian Franzen).

Crossfit Insurgent is a local gym located at 2229 E. Garvey Avenue North, West Covina, CA 91791, that offers a variety of classes for different fitness levels.  The owner of Crossfit Insurgent, Mr. Brian Franzen, has been described by those that know him as an ethical, hardworking, passionate, and dedicated owner.  He opened his gym in October 2013, and has been so successful that he has already had to expand his gym space.  Memberships have risen consistently since its grand opening; having grown from 30 members when he opened to over 250 members today.  Mr. Franzen has also been an advocate for providing afterschool programs to the youth and established the “Maria’s Kids After School” program at his gym.  The “Maria’s Kids After School” program provides a free, safe, and fun environment for positive personal growth among middle school and high school students. Crossfit Insurgent has had great success, and has shown exemplary commitment and dedication to our community, serving as a model for small businesses in West Covina.
