Walk with a Cop on International Walk to School Day

Post Date:10/03/2017 5:30 PM

WEST COVINA, CA, October 3, 2017 – The City of West Covina will celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 4th.  This year’s celebration will include “Walk with a Cop” featuring members of the West Covina Police Department who will be on hand from 7:45am until school begins at Rowland Avenue Elementary School located at 1355 E Rowland Avenue, West Covina, CA 91790.  Officers will be providing traffic safety tips and answering questions from young students as they help them safely cross the street and walk to school.  The officers will also be giving out “Officer in Training” badges for those students that demonstrate excellent pedestrian and bike safety!

The inaugural “Walk with a Cop” event follows a series of successful “Coffee with a Cop” and “Pizza with a Cop” community events conducted by the West Covina Police Department this year.

This is the third year that Rowland Avenue Elementary School has participated in International Walk to School Day.  Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day.  It began in 1997 as a one-day event.  Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and included in pedestrian and bicycle safety plans for cities across the U.S.

The City of West Covina is currently drafting an Active Transportation Plan regarding pedestrian and bike safety.  The plan will identify and prioritize existing pedestrian, bicycle, and other non-automobile transportation issues affecting West Covina.  The next community meeting on the Active Transportation Plan will be held on Wednesday, October 25th at 6:30pm at the West Covina Senior Center.
