Go West Covina - Microtransit (Starting November 18, 2024)
The City of West Covina is excited to be launching a new transportation service! Funded, in part, through a grant awarded through LA Metro’s Visionary Seed Fund program, the City is working with Via Transportation to implement Go West Covina, a microtransit service, which starts on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Through this new program, powered by TransitTech provider Via, riders will benefit from on-demand, app-based transit services that operate with greater flexibility than traditional bus routes. The service will use smaller vehicles to enhance mobility options in areas that are not easily accessible by large buses or fixed transit routes. Routing software uses live, on-the-ground information to add people traveling in the same direction into the same vehicle, allowing passengers to be picked up and dropped off in a continuous stream that translates into a ride system that is highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
Riders will be able to book a trip using a smartphone application or by calling the program’s call center. In addition, riders will be able to request trips on-demand for travel within minutes of requesting a ride, in advance for travel at a future date or time, or sign up for subscription rides. Riders who use a smartphone to book a ride will be able to track their vehicle in real-time.
The pilot project will run for a 12-month period. The service will operate Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm, with four vehicles and one wheelchair accessible vehicle in the active fleet. No fare is planned during the 12-month pilot, though evaluation will be on-going. Riders must be at least 13 years old to ride alone.
The service will operate within West Covina as shown at the following link: Go West Covina - Service Area . The service will also connect to Metrolink Train stations in Baldwin Park and Covina.
Shuttle service on the City’s Red and Blue lines, which serves the same area, will continue to operate through January 2025 as a transition period. The Red and Blue Lines will be discontinued effective February 1, 2025, and throughout the life of the project. The City’s Green Line and Dial-A-Ride services will continue as usual.
Please go to www.westcovina.org/gowestcovina for more information or to download the App, which is available for iOS and Android.
