Calling all explorers! Calling all explorers! If you are looking for a challenge, interested in learning new skills, enjoy teamwork, fun and excitement, and are interested in learning about a career in the fire service then we have a program just for you.
The City of West Covina Fire Department Explorer Program is offering young adults between the ages of 15 to 21 years of age the opportunity to become part of its explorer program. Fire explorers meet once a week at one of the 5 fire stations in the city. Weekly meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m.
Fire explorers learn fire-fighting skills, hose lay evolutions, ladder techniques, salvage operations, wildland fire fighting procedures, proper use of fire fighting tools and equipment, breathing apparatus, basic first aid, patient vital sign assessment and other related subjects.
After explorers meet the requirements, they have the opportunity to apply skills they have learned and gain valuable experience through the fire departments Ride Along Program. During a ride along an explorer can work side by side with firefighters and respond to actual fires and emergencies on Paramedic engine companies or the fire departments Ladder Truck Company.
Fire explorers compete in Muster competitions using old time fire-fighting techniques in friendly competition with other explorer posts and are also involved in many community service projects.
If you are interested in becoming an explorer for the West Covina Fire Department, please contact Fire Administration at (626) 939-8824 or WestCovinaFireExplorers@westcovina.org.

West Covina Fire Stations are a "Safe Haven" for Newborns
A program to help ensure the safety of newborn infants has been added to the list of services provided by the West Covina Fire Department. All West Covina Fire stations are trained and equipped to receive unwanted, new born infants. This program, named " Safe Surrender," allows the parent or parents of an unwanted infant (72 hours old or less) to bring the baby to any of the City's five fire stations and turn it over to firefighters with no questions asked. All West Covina fire stations display the "Safe Surrender" placard in the front window as well as with a large sign closer to the street.
When an infant is surrendered to firefighters, they accept the infant and assess him or her for any emergency medical conditions. Firefighters ask the parents to fill out a medical questionnaire that provides, any future caregivers, information regarding the infant's family medical history. This questionnaire is anonymous and voluntary, but extremely important to the infant's future. Parents also are given a numbered identification bracelet and an identical bracelet will be placed on the infant. This enables them to claim the infant if the were to change their mind later. At no time during the process will the firefighters be judgmental or accusatory.
This program has been implemented to ensure that parents of unwanted infants have a viable option besides abandonment of the newborn. In addition to West Covina fire stations, infants can be surrendered to any hospital or at any Los Angeles County fire station. If you have any additional questions regarding the "Safe Surrender" program please call West Covina Fire Administration at (626) 939-8824.

The RSVP program was initiated with the help of a firefighters assistance grant that was obtained from the federal government. You can tell the RSVP's from firefighters at a distance by their light blue shirts and volunteer patch in comparison to the dark blue, fire resistant shirts the firefighters wear. They will be driving the streets to serve you in a traditional fire department red and white vehicle with the marking of RSVP on the side.
Some of the members are also volunteers in the Seniors Helping Officers Program (SHOP) in the police department. These volunteers are truly doing double duty.
Some of their duties involve Fire Prevention support which consists of plan check delivery and pickup, Knox box system operation, gate card reader system checks, and inspection support services: minor hazard follow-up compliance inspections, mail and equipment delivery, inspection of special hazard identification, weeds identification and compliance, checking open status construction projects, and fire hydrant inspections.
They support the operations section with public education program assistance through logistics support and program delivery supplementation. RSVP'S will also assist with emergency response support in traffic control, fire personnel and customer support, equipment reconnaissance, and providing support duties on the emergency scene to firefighters.
For further information regarding this program please call the West Covina Fire Department at (626) 939-8824.
